The biggest challenge in distributing my book “75 German-Speaking Influential People” was that some people simply could not log into magcloud. Magcloud is a “print-on-demand” platform that is very useful when I was publishing magazines, but it just didn’t work out for this book. As of December 2020, I only sold 22 books and .pdf’s on this platform.
Then, someone featured in my book, “real estate guru” Ozzie Jurock, recommended his publisher and helped me get 100 books printed and sent to Vancouver. This was perfect for my book launch held November 7th at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. People could pick up their “signed copies” there, but the challenge was COVID and traffic. At least 3 people who signed up didn’t make it to the event because of an accident on the Lions Gate Bridge.
Out of the 100 books ordered, around 80 have been sold. Some of them at the book launch, but also quite a few around Christmas time. I even mailed a few copies to Surrey, North Vancouver, Ontario and the Sunshine Coast!
Finally, the time came to publish on Amazon. The challenge is designing a cover, but this time I decided to take advantage of the templates on offer. The result is that my book can now be ordered directly from Austria, Germany and Switzerland and paid for with local currency using a credit card. This can make all the difference.

The picture above shows very meaningful aspects of my book publishing adventure. The top left picture shows me standing next to a banner from “Brian Jessel BMW” who were the main sponsors of the event holding flowers brought to me by some Board Members of the German Canadian Business Association. None of the Board were able to attend, but they still got together to purchase this gorgeous bouquet of flowers.
The top right picture shows me dropping off a bouquet and a copy of my book to honorary member of the German Canadian Business Association Wolfgang Christl’s house. Wolfgang was basicallly the person who was instrumental in me writing this book, as he had saved decades of material from all the main German & Austrian organizations in Vancouver. He also made great suggestions and gave me feedback and when I finally held a copy of the finished book in my hand, he drove all the way from Richmond to drop off flowers, a Riesling (wine) and even $25! Wolfgang passed away November 1, 2020, just 6 days before my book launch and we held a minute of Silence to honour him.
The bottom left picture shows Abdel Karim Awwad from Brian Jessel BMW, Dr. Florian Kuchenbauer, our keynote speaker, and Ozzie Jurock, the MC extraordinaire – these 3 gentlemen made my book launch the best it could have been! I am so grateful for their contributions.
This book publishing thing has been a real adventure, leading me to making new connections, establishing closer ties with people I have known for a long time and for an opportunity to say “Thank You” to everyone who made the German Community what it is today.
I am writing Book #2, which will hopefully be out by summer 2021. Stay safe out there!
